Barb Alves

In the last few years Barb Alves has been painting acrylics, sketching ,quilting and making collages. She painted and drew alongside her twin sister since childhood, starting around 4 years old. Both sisters studied art in High School and Barb continued into college. During her college years she felt it would be too difficult to make a living as an artist and switched into the sciences. Since retiring she has picked up art again.

During her working years she managed to get in 3 months of art studies at The Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Since retiring she has taken Art Guild workshops in acrylics taught by Maria Otheguy.

Three of her paintings sold at the recent Art Guild Auction in Humacao in 2024. Two quilts have been completed and gifted to friends and family. A third quilt is in progress. The collages stack up under a bed.

“My greatest enjoyment in art is in the actual doing of it. The world falls away, it’s a meditative process, and I come away feeling refreshed. If I end up with a nice piece of art at the end, even better. I love realism and would love to be able to paint something so real that you would try to pick it up. Designs of real objects is also a big interest.”
