Kinusaiga Workshop with Carroll Kelly

Kinusaiga, also called Japanese fabric mosaic, uses scraps of cloth tucked into carved or traced lines onto a foam board to create a picture without drawing.

We are new to this art form and invite you to experiment with us First, a demonstration of the basic tools. Next, choose a simple design and transfer it to a foam-covered board and select fabrics to complete the design. Students learn how to cut small pieces of fabric and fit them neatly into the grooves, building up the image layer by layer.

As novices, we will share what we’ve learned so far and encourage experimentation. We have a motley collection of tools and an extensive collection of fabric scraps, some foam boards and simple designs.

We will be making an 8 x 10” piece of art. The supply fee is $20 per student. This class is for students age 15 and above.
