Sophia Gonzalez

Sophia Gonzalez was born in Rhode Island into a Greek immigrant family. She was raised with a heavy influence of the Greek language and culture and cuisine. Sophia earned her Bachelor’s degree and Teaching Certificate from Providence College and then her Master's degree in Teaching from UMASS-Dartmouth.

After teaching Spanish for many years in East Providence, RI,  she moved to New Bedford, MA after she met and married her husband and worked in his medical office for 16 years. They are now happily retired in Puerto Rico.

Sophia’s family was very close-knit and gathered frequently, mostly centered around food and celebrations. Her father and his siblings were all prominent restaurateurs in RI.  Sophia worked in her father’s restaurants over the years.  She also spent most of her summers in Greece with her family there.

Spending time with family in RI and in Greece is where Sophia’s love for cooking and baking flourished. Many of her recipes are handed down from her mother, grandmother and her many aunts. Although she cooks and bakes many Greek recipes,  her specialties are Baklava (walnuts and honey layered in filo and topped with a sweet syrup)  and Spanakopita (spinach and feta cheese mixed with herbs and wrapped in filo). One taste and you’ll be hooked!
